The Akwa Ibom State Police Command successfully neutralized three suspected kidnappers during a tactical operation on Thursday, December 5, 2024, at their hideout in Ikot Ukpong village, Abak Local Government Area.
The operation led to the rescue of Barr. Emmanuel Ubengama, a prominent lawyer and director in the Ministry of Justice, Abak LGA, along with his niece. The two were abducted a day earlier while traveling on the Abak-Ikot Abasi Road.
Following the abduction, the incident was reported to the Abak Police Division. The Commissioner of Police, Joseph Eribo, promptly mobilized tactical operatives to locate the kidnappers and secure the hostages.
Acting on intelligence, officers located the kidnappers’ hideout. Upon arrival, a gunfight ensued, resulting in the deaths of three suspects, while others managed to escape.
After the exchange, the police discovered the victims tied up inside a specially constructed soak-away facility at the hideout. Both individuals were safely rescued and are now receiving care.
ASP Timfon John, the Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed the incident, stating that efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects. She reiterated the command’s zero-tolerance policy for criminal activities and assured residents of heightened security measures during the holiday season.
“The Command has warned criminal elements that nowhere in Akwa Ibom is safe for them,” ASP John stated.
The police also urged the public to cooperate with security agencies by sharing intelligence to curb crime in the state.
