Nigerian sprinter Favour Ofili has earned a place in the final of the women’s 200m event at the ongoing Paris Olympic Games.
She achieved this milestone by finishing second in her semi-final with a season’s best time of 22.05 seconds. The race was won by Julien Alfred, who clocked in at 21.98 seconds.
Ofili’s performance is historic as she becomes the first Nigerian woman since Mary Onyali to qualify for the 200m final at the Olympics. Onyali, the only Nigerian to have won a medal in this event, set a high standard for future generations.
In the men’s 200m race, Udodi Onwuzurike will have another chance to make history. After finishing fifth in his initial heat with a time of 20.55 seconds, Onwuzurike will compete in the Repechage Round, which offers a second chance for athletes who did not secure automatic semifinal spots.
Divine Oduduru, who reached the semifinals in 2016 and 2021, was the last Nigerian man to advance that far, although he did not make it to the final. Onwuzurike aims to become the fourth Nigerian man to reach the semifinals of the 200m at the Olympics.
