A team from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) faced a deadly attack in Anambra State on Friday, resulting in the death of one officer and leaving another critically injured.
The officers were reportedly on a mission to apprehend suspected internet fraudsters, commonly known as “Yahoo Boys,” when they were ambushed and attacked with gunfire.
Sources indicate that the team had traveled from the EFCC’s zonal headquarters in Enugu to carry out the operation in Anambra.
The suspected fraudsters, who are believed to have been aware of the operation, launched the attack in a bid to evade arrest.
The officer who lost his life, an assistant superintendent, had recently completed a promotional examination.
The injured officer remains in critical condition at an undisclosed hospital as of Friday night.
Confirming the incident, Anambra State Police Command spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, stated that investigations are ongoing.
“Investigation into the sad incident is ongoing. The suspect is in custody while the arm has been recovered. Further details shall be communicated, please,” Ikenga said.
